FST Write a Play Competition Honors
Sarasota’s Sister Cities Schools
Florida Studio Theatre’s 2007 Young Playwrights Festival has culminated
the WRITE A PLAY program and a part of the Sarasota Festival of New Plays.
The WRITE A PLAY program, now in its twelfth year, has touched more than a
million children, bringing the appreciation and love of writing to the classroom.
The program continues to expand, thanks in part to grants from such organizations
as the Sarasota County Arts Council, a Tourist Development Funded Program;
the Florida Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
With the help of the Sarasota Sister Cities Association, the WRITE A PLAY program went international in 2006 sending FST’s Associate Director Kate Alexander and 2 teaching artists to Tel Mond, Israel. Each year FST receives more plays from children in other countries, and was thrilled at the chance to reach out to the students in Israel directly. Additionally, 2 Israeli educators have made their way to Sarasota to see their students’ winning plays be performed on May 6, 2006
The FST team will be going to Dunfermline, Scotland in the spring of 2007
as part of the on-going commitment to new play development.
