The 2018 Sister Cities Association of Sarasota prestigious One World Award winners have been selected. Kate Alexander of the Florida Studio Theater is the Individual winner and Second Chance-Last Opportunity is the Organizational winner. April Glasco, Founder & CEO, will accept the award on behalf of Second Chance-Last Opportunity.

Kate Alexander has staged more than 50 plays, including four playsby Edward Albee. She launched the theater’s Education Program which offers children and adults opportunities to discover their creativity, with over 20 classes weekly. She also began the “Write a Play” program that encourages elementary and high school students from our Sister Cities and Florida to write plays for live performance by FST actors. Impacting over one million children, FST programs have inspired students to open their minds, explore their imaginations, and write them down. FST has grown from one to five theaters, as well as the large education program.

The mission of Second Chance-Last Opportunity is to empower people in crisis by providing them with essential skills and tools so they can manage their lives more productively. The vision is to serve as a gateway to hope for individuals who want to change their lives for the better. April Glasco, the current CEO, was an owner of store in Sarasota’s Newtown Community that struggles with issues of crime, drugs, domestic violence, and unemployment. April watched young people make bad choices and ruin their lives so she decided to do something about it, closed her storefront, gave away its contents, and in 1995 re-opened the store as Second Chance-Last Opportunity, a hands-on intervention center. Since then, SCLO programs have grown to include life-management skills training, parenting skills training, counseling, mentoring, HIV-AIDS education and counseling, summer and after-school youth programs, food, clothing and shelter referrals, and holiday meals and food distribution.

Entertainment by the Sarasota Cuban Ballet School.
